He’s Fine

For Mac’s whole life, I have compared him to other kids.  Every growth and milestone achievement has been observed, noted and marked.  And he’s always been ‘behind’.  At least in my mind.  Whatever his little girlfriends would do, he would be a few months behind.  The worrier in me would think, Oh no! There’s something going on!  He’ll never get it! Everyone always said, It’s boys. They’re always behind girls! Don’t worry about it.  He’s fine! Then, sure enough, a few months later, he would pick it up.  So as he got older, I stopped worrying about it so much, but I still noted that he was ‘behind’ everyone else.  He didn’t crawl till 9 months.  He didn’t know his alphabet as quickly.  He had no letter recognition by 2, couldn’t pump on the swing, doesn’t color things in, can’t write very neatly,  etc…  Again, not that big of a deal, so I wasn’t losing sleep about it, but still I noticed.

My latest ‘notice’ has been that he doesn’t draw stick figures.  Never.  I used to encourage him to draw faces, smileys, etc… but nothing.  He refused.  So, I let it go, but noticed that kids much younger than him would draw pictures of their families, themselves, their friends… Come to think of it, he doesn’t really draw anything.  He just colors ‘blobs’ of color around a piece of paper.  So there was the voice in the back of my head again.  What is wrong?  Why doesn’t he draw pictures?  What should I do to teach him this?  He can’t go through life not knowing how to draw at all!! 🙂

Then today.  “Mom, I’m gonna draw you.”

Brother See, Brother Do

Sometimes, they get along. 🙂

I love to watch them interact when they aren’t fighting.  Here was such a time.  Patrick had set up the chairs this way, Mac thought it was an ingenious move, complimented Patrick and then proceeded to play.  As Patrick approached the chairs, I thought, Oh no, here we go.  Mac is going to have a compete melt down that Patrick is ‘messing’ up the chairs and won’t let him play. Typical Mac style.  However, to my complete and glorious amazement, Mac shared.  As I watched them playing together, I realized this was a great example of Patrick just wanting to be like his big brother.  For once, his big brother let it happen. 🙂

Here is another small example of Patrick mimicking his brother.  You hear Mac sing a little song, then Patrick repeats it (I have no idea what they’re singing…).  WarningNot an overly entertaining video.  If you’re a Patrick fan, you’ll enjoy it.  If not, just skip! 🙂  For some reason, I love to watch this.  It’s a great picture of his personality and his love for life.  Simple enjoyments.

Party Mario Style

In honor of Zoe turning 5, we attended a Mario party!!  Even though all the kids were afraid of Mario (who made a personal appearance!) the adults got pictures with him…including me!  Mac and Patrick were not too keen on the idea of games, but Patrick did participate in ‘Pin the Moustache on Mario’ and Mac did the ‘Star Walk’.

See the rest here.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ZOE! 🙂

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Shannon has been wanting to go this new Japanese/Asian restaurant for awhile now.  I’ve been dragging my feet even though Mac was even begging to go try it.  1.) I just don’t enjoy trying new things. I don’t step out of my comfort zone very often.  2.) I don’t care for Asian food.  3.) I feared (knew) they wouldn’t have anything for the kids to eat (due to me not being willing to try new things often, my kids aren’t exposed to new things often!) and 4.)  I just didn’t want to go!  So when it closed down, I was somewhat relieved.  Then a month later, a new one opened in its place!  So, as is tradition in the family, the birthday person gets to choose where we go out to dinner.  Shannon chose to go last week on his birthday.  I figured, better get it over with! 🙂  I was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere.  It also wasn’t packed at all (I’m never sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing in a restaurant…).  As I suspected, there was no kids’ menu and I had no idea how to order anything.  But we muddled through and ordered our main meal, that came with soup and salad, and appetizers including sushi.  The boys were great and tried it all!  I couldn’t believe it.  They each found something they really loved and had a great time.

Then we headed home for cake and ice cream.  Every year, Mac makes Daddy have a cake, we sing to him and then they get to enjoy it.

You can see all the pics from the evening here. 🙂
